Storm Imperial IPA

Weirdest f’in movie paired with the weirdest f’in beer. Seriously, I had a very odd night. I have been hearing about the BrewDog beers for a while so I was excited when I saw the entire lineup at the Beverage Den in Bennington yesterday. Tonight was the first one and I chose Storm IPA. This IPA is odd. To top the evening off I picked a film that netflix keeps telling me I would love, Delicatessen. This movie is odd.
The two though, perfect together.
The dystopian french film was perfectly paired with this smokey earth ale. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Neither was bad, both were almost beyond words.
Pouring a golden colour like whiskey, which it happens to be aged in whiskey barrels. With little to no head I must admit that this beer is a couple months past its, “best by” date. However, from what I read it is the same odd/off brew as it was a few back. The aroma is like wet peat, buckets and buckets of wet peat moss smoking in a pile. And the flavour, kinda like burnt cigar or cigs in the bottom of your beer. The really odd thing, I kinda liked it, as an experience. After a bit you notice that there is a sweetness to the brew, like a cadbury cream egg. And there is a complexity. There is a dirt solidness to this ale. This is an Imperial European beer not an Imperial US Ale. This is not over hopped West Coast goodness, this is odd and big Scottish ale. Big on the malt and alcohol. The hops are there and they give it the dry finish and take the edge off the burnt tones.
The movie, french dystopian cannibalism. Seriously, I had these together. The setting is smokey and bleak. Most of the colours are similar to the golden hue of the beer. Nothing is growing and the earth is smoking and covered in dust. The inhabitants just want to die and it is funny as anything I’ve ever laid my eyes on.
I say that both are a success in their own odd ways.
